The Seasons

June, Jericho Road, Hartford, Vt.

Cyclists can be assured that after May 1 temperatures will rise above the 50 degree mark almost every day. By June 1 65 degrees has been reached, and by July it’s summer (!) and 80 to 85 is a normal daytime high temperature. Prevailing summer winds blow from the southwest – up the Connecticut Valley – with dry northwest breezes taking over after weather fronts pass through. Northeast wind means rain.

Two periods are of particular note: by May 15th the back roads have dried out and through June the countryside is at its most active with birds and animals. The late August through mid-September period features more moderate temperatures, dry weather and fresh corn and tomatoes from roadside stands.

The cool mornings in the foliage period of late September through Columbus Day require appropriate gear. Expect ground fog in the river valleys until nine or ten AM, then temperatures in the 60s, or higher.
